Last year, my then-eight-year old son found my then-ten-year old daughter’s school ID on our kitchen table and started examining it.  Under a shiny protective laminate, a license-sized card displayed a picture of her.  The ID provided her name and our home address.  It also listed her physical descriptions, such as height, weight, hair and eye color.  He seemed to study the final box very carefully.  It listed her gender.  It read, “Sex: F”.  After another moment of deep thought, he turned to me and pointed at the gender box.  “I don’t think Kayla is an F,” he said.  “But I wouldn’t rank her any higher than a D.”  He thought that “Sex” was short for “Sexy”.

I share this story because it reflects one of the many joys that children provide.  They view the world in a very different way than adults.  And that can be a refreshing, if not comical, perspective.  The next time you have the chance to spend time with kids, whether they be your own children, your grandchildren, nieces, nephews, neighborhood kids, etc., take time and talk to them.  I’m a firm believer that adults can always learn a thing or two from children.  And if not…at the very least, it will be entertaining!
